Tonematch Controller
Stage Mixer for the innovative Bose L1 performance System

quick L1 system primer
L1 line-array speaker technology is a complete reinvention of the performance amplification paradigm that has been in use for over 70 years. The so-called ‘Triple System’ (musician amps, main PA stacks and monitors) - carries many issues for both performers and the audience - as shown below.
Issues with the Triple System:
The L1 System
The line-array system takes advantage of a smaller speaker’s wider acoustic pattern. Vertical arrays of these speakers, which are varied at sideways angles, provides over 150 degrees of coverage into a room. The result is consistent & wider dispersion of a musician’s sound that the audience, bandmates, and musicians themselves can hear, allowing for the elimination of monitors & Mains speakers while improving the auditory experience. Additionally for musicians, the setup helps to recapture the dynamics of band interplay, where musicians hear each other more directly and ‘riff’ off of each other’s energy and creativity.
Tonematch controller
Critical to the system is a way to allow musicians to control their inputs and tailor the tonal qualities and volume of their sound output. The system needed to be intuitive to customize & setup, as well as adjust easily during the heat of performance. The design also integrates a hardcover to protect the controls and interface from the rigors of touring.
For easy-access during performance, we devised a system that allowed the T1 to be mounted to either the Speaker array or a microphone stand. The mounting bar houses inside the Hardcover lid for safe-keeping during transport.
